How Tiny Can They Get? - A Look At Super-Mini Audio Power Amplifiers
Newest types of super-mini audio amplifiers show the continuing trend of miniaturization of consumer devices such as cell phones or computers. While the features are growing, the size of today's consumer products is getting smaller and smaller. The majority of audio amplifiers would be tube amps in the past. Even though a large number of fanatics still is fond of tube amplifiers, they have been replace by solid state amps for the most part.
Modern solid-state amplifiers combine the conventional pre amp and power amp stages into a neat single package no larger than a DVD player. New developments in audio technology in regard to power efficiency of have allowed the development of a new generation of super-miniature audio amplifiers, such as Amphony’s microFidelity Model 100. These mini amps use no more space than a deck of cards but deliver up to 50 Watts, which is plenty to drive a speaker to high volume.
Past audio amplifiers with "Class-A" and "Class-AB" architectures have comparatively low power efficiency. Analog audio amplifiers by nature only convert a small portion of the power they consume - normally in the order of 20% to 30% - into audio while a large part is dissipated as heat. Therefore analog amplifiers require a reasonable amount of cooling. The amount of cooling depends on the amplifier rated output power. These heat sinks prevent the amplifier to be built into a small form factor.
Digital "Class-D" amplifiers offer higher power efficiency than analog amplifiers - typically around 80% to 95% - and thus can be miniaturized. One major difficulty which has slowed the progress of "Class-D" amplifiers is audio distortion which is caused by nonlinearities of the switching output stage.
Some new amplifier technologies have emerged. Amongst those are "Class-T" and newer generation "Class-D" architectures. These types of new architectures, such as the technology used in Amphony's Model 100 use a feedback mechanism. The output signal is fed back to the amplifier input. Using this design, the amplifier is capable to compensate for errors caused by the switching output stage. Amplifiers based on this design are capable to accomplish low audio distortion similar to previous analog amplifiers but at the same time the power efficiency of digital amplifiers.
These new generation miniature audio amplifiers open up applications where traditional amplifiers would fail, such as speaker installations where space is premium, such as in-ceiling speakers and applications that connect speakers to a cable box or DVD/MP3 player.
amplifier question ( i need help)??
i bought a 240watt 2 channel amplifer for the 2speakers i just bought to replace the 2 back ones, do i jus hook the amplifier audio cables to the back of the cd player do give them more bass, or do i have to hook them (the speakers) up to the amplifier too, if so do i need to unplug the wires from the cdplayer to the speakers and just have them hooked up to the amplifier
Ok assuming you know you need an amp kit to run the actual amp, if your head unit does not have RCA plug ins for your rear speakers you will need an adapter that converts the rear speaker wires to RCA wires (you can get that adapter at wal mart, about 10-15 dollars i think?) then you will run the RCA wires to your amps input plug ins, then you connect the correct speaker wire (i mean currect size-wise (Ga.)) from your amp to your speakers.....Good Luck!
Ferguson Hill releases horn speaker system for TVs (cnet)
Take an unconventional approach to improving your TV sound with this new
2.1-channel audio system from the British loudspeaker company. (Credit:
Ferguson Hill)Ferguson Hill was founded in 2003 and is pretty well known for
its stylish acrylic horn speakers, the largest of which is a space-consuming
1.65m tall. The British loudspeaker company's latest speaker system, however,
is made for TVs and a lot smaller. The FH009 is a 2.1-channel audio system. It
comes with a pair of horn speakers--that can be wall-mounted or placed on
stands--and a dual-driver subwoofer unit that houses the integrated amplifier.
This 2.1-channel setup is rated to deliver 128W RMS of power, with 64W split
between the two horns and the other 64W dedicated to the sub. While the audio
specs and design are no doubt impressive, we were a little confused about the
selection of inputs--it has two pairs of analog RCA inputs at the rear as well
as a 3.5mm stereo minijack and USB port on the front. It also has a built-in
DAC for audio from portable media players or smartphones. Since this kit is
meant as a companion to HDTVs, Ferguson audio could have included a digital
optical ...
