Used cars are becoming more popular than new cars for many because of the worldwide recession. However checking the tyres on any used car that you are considering buying is very important. It is very important to check what state the tyres are in before you buy as it could impact on how safe the car is. Neglected tyres may indicate that the overall condition of the car has also been neglected.
Mismatched tyres are another thing that should be looked out for. All tyres on a car should really be of similar brands and similar specifications. Having mismatched tyres can affect the safety of a car and especially having mismatched tyres on the same axle. The performance of the car can also be affected negatively as well as safety. This problem spreads across used cars nationwide even though most of us would not be aware of it.
According to a study on used cars, there were more than sixty percent of used cars with mismatched tyres. More shockingly was the fact that sometimes all four tyres were of different specs or brands. The amount of cars that had different tyres across a single axle was as much as 38% and many cars were using budget tyres. Studies have actually shown that these budget tyres do not perform as well as premium tyres and this is a further problem in wet conditions.
Although it is understandable for people to choose budget tyres for their cars in the current economic climate, having all tyres the same can increase the performance and the safety levels of the car. Even some used car dealers selling used cars under a certified used car program had cars for sale with mismatched tyres. So checking the condition of the tyres on any used car is the responsibility of the buyer.
