Cordless Battery Maintenance Tips
Demand has greatly increased for cordless tools. The flexibility they offer is just to great to want to keep hassling with cords. Thus the need for better high powered batteries has increased as well. The technology in batteries has increased dramatically in the past few years.
So if you are one of those people who are at some point dependent on battery, you may want to make sure that your battery gives you the best performance you deserve. But though you bought the best battery in town, you should know how to take care of it to enjoy your battery at its best.
Battery functions at its best when it is charged fully. It became weak when it is either completely drained or overcharged. When your battery is low, you should charge it immediately to prevent the battery from becoming weak. Because whenever a battery is drained to zero percent, both the positive and negative plate’s active material are converted to lead sulfate. And when the electric charge of these plates become more similar, the battery’s acid become weaker. It is through charging that it reverses the process and restores the strength of the battery. So, you should make sure that the battery be charged immediately because prolonged discharge of a battery may decrease its life, and the harm may be beyond repair.
Keeping the above causes in mind that could harm the life of your battery you will want to figure out how best to keep your battery in good shape. It is not good for business to just run out and get another battery. It is best to take care of your tools and thus leverage your investment in them. hey there all the experienced electricians:
1) i have a 6v 4.5ah sealed rechargeable lead battery. how can i SAFELY recharge it without an expensive Commercial charger? i have access to transformers, aswell as 6v solar pannels. will these work? what voltage and amperage will i need?
2) how can i raise the voltage of an output?
3) do resistors lower voltage, amperes, or both?
1. You can charge it with a DC supply, if you have a transformer with a secondary of more than 6 volts and some rectifiers, and the proper resistor to limit the current. The 6 volt solar panel won't work, you need at least 7-8 volts. BUT, without a reliable means of detecting the state of the charge of the battery, you run the risk of overcharging it and damaging it. There are lots of articles on charging lead acid batteries on the internet, read a few of them.

Nanotechnology could make battery recycling economically attractive (nanowerk)
Many batteries still contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, and
nickel, which can contaminate the environment and pose a potential threat to
human health when batteries are improperly disposed of. Not only do the
billions upon billions of batteries in landfills pose an environmental
problem, they also are a complete waste of a potential and cheap raw material.
Unfortunately, current recycling methods for many battery types, especially
the small consumer type ones, don't make sense from an economical point of
view since the recycling costs exceed the recoverable metals value.
Researchers in India have carried out research to address the recycling of
consumer-type batteries. They report the recovery of pure zinc oxide
nanoparticles from spent Zn-Mn dry alkaline batteries.
