12 Volt Solar Chargers
For individuals who are interested in saving money and reducing emissions and dependence on energy from overseas, a 12 volt solar charger is a surprisingly easy-to-build and versatile choice. If you’re interested in finding out more about different types of solar battery chargers, please read on.
Generally speaking, a battery charger is a power supply that transfers electricity of a certain voltage to a battery. The battery is connected to the charger, and disconnected after it’s fully charged. A 15-18 volt power supply can be used to charge a 12 volt battery. Unfortunately, this kind of battery charger poses the risk of overcharging.
An overcharged battery’s life is likely to decrease. In the event that you seriously or repeatedly overcharge a 12 volt battery, the battery may be damaged to the point that it will no longer hold a charge. The way to make sure that the correct voltage is used and that the battery is kept from being overcharged is to employ a charge controller. A charge controller is equally necessary when you’re using a 12 volt solar charger, as it allows you to leave a battery in throughout the day without the danger of overcharging.
For 12 volt batteries, the most widely used kind of charge controller is the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) type. With a PWM charge controller, a switch is flipped on and off repeatedly depending on the flow of the electricity. In this sense, the switch is mostly “on” when the charging process is first activated. The switch gradually spends less time in an activated state as power is transferred to the battery, and when it’s fully charged, the switch goes off permanently. A microprocessor chip oversees the charging process. There is no danger of overcharging with this type of charge controller, even if you have it plugged into a battery indefinitely. When you have a battery that you don’t necessarily use all the time, you can take advantage of this form of “trickle charging” in order to make sure that the battery is fully charged and ready whenever you need it. This feature is obviously very handy for a 12 volt solar charger. This, in turn, will let you keep the 12 volt battery for your boat or RV charged for whenever you need it.
A 12 volt solar charger is just that simple. The source of the power itself is the only thing that makes a 12 volt solar charger different. As one would expect, a solar panel is the source of the power for a solar battery charger. If you want to save money, building a DIY solar panel to use in a 12 volt solar charger is a great way to go. To learn more, take a look at DIY Solar Panels.
Most of the solar panels used on houses contain 1/2 volt and 3-4 amp solar cells. If you’re using these types of cells, it will be necessary to use a number of them to generate the 15-18 volts necessary to charge a 12 volt battery. Currently, there are small solar panels of many different voltages available. The charger won’t work unless you match the voltage of the solar panel to your charge controller. The correct voltage is indicated by the voltage rating, which is shown on every charge controller. Usually, it’s best to use a solar panel of 15-18 volts if you can’t use a charge controller. However, if you are using a charge controller, it’s important to use the appropriate voltage. GreenDIYEnergy is the best guide to building your own 12 volt solar charger. To read more, take a look at GreenDIYEnergy Review.
Depending on the controller, the best way to wire it to the solar panel can be different. Find out the type of connector used on your charge controller, and solder one of the same type onto the solar panel. If you can’t use a charge controller, use the type of connector that’s on the battery instead. Spring loaded clamps are a good choice if you’re using a larger type of 12 volt battery. For people who would prefer not to solder, you don’t necessarily have to solder (although this type of soldering is very simple); it is possible to just twist the wires together and apply electrical tape. You won’t need any special equipment other than a decent soldering iron and solder, which you can find easily at places like Radio Shack. First, twist the wires together. Then, use the soldering iron on the wires. Then, touch the solder to the wires, and wait for it to melt. As long as you’re careful not to burn yourself, and remember to heat the wires and not the solder itself with the soldering iron, it’ll be a simple process. Homemade Energy is another great guide to building your own 12 volt solar charger. If you’re interested, visit Homemade Energy Review.
It’s really that simple! Then, you can put together your own 12 volt solar charger. First, you’ll have to have a 12 volt battery. A charge controller with the appropriate voltage is also necessary. Next, you’ll need a solar panel that also outputs the correct voltage for the charge controller – you can build one yourself or buy one. Finally, connect the solar panel to the charge controller, and the charge controller to the battery. Once you’ve done this, you’ll have permanent, free power! What’s more, you get some serious residual benefits: you save money, because you don’t have to pay for the electricity you need to charge the battery; you reduce emissions, as energy generated by solar panels doesn’t pollute like energy from oil or coal-fired plants does; and you help the country by lowering dependence on foreign oil.
