Bonsai Wiring Basics
Many bonsai trees get their elegant profile through a procedure that comprises wrapping aluminum or copper wiring from the bonsai's base and around the branches. The basic bonsai style can be created by wrapping the trunk and branches of the tree with wire of the right length and thickness. The formal upright style needs no wrapping, however the cascade design involves many months of considerable training.
You must be very cautious when you're applying wire to the trunk or branches of a bonsai tree due to the stress it causes. Improper technique could easily result in broken branches or even worse, a damaged trunk that causes the tree to perish. Furthermore, it's possible to wrap it too closely, or you might choose the wrong months to begin the training. This can cause lasting damage to the tree, or might even kill it outright.
Before you tackle your actual tree, practice with a basic wooden pole or small tree branch. You’ll get experience holding the branch while concurrently wrapping from doing this. As soon as you're comfortable hanging on to the branch one-handed while wrapping with your other hand, not pulling or bending anything expect the wrapped part, you can then move ahead to the bonsai tree.
First, you have to pick the most suitable wire for your project. The two most common are aluminum and copper, however copper is more attractive over the bonsai training process. When wrapping a bonsai, don't ever make use of steel, only annealed copper wire due to possible toxicity to certain species of bonsai. It is easier for novices to apply aluminum since it is less rigid. Copper wiring tends to be a bit stiffer, but it can also scar the bonsai if you do not apply it with care. As a rule of thumb, choose wire that is 1/3 of the branch's thickness.
Well placed little stresses along the tree trunk or branch are what permits the wire to change the shape of the tree. So, to avoid a situation where only the wire bends, instead of the tree, the wire needs to be of a stiffer quality than the tree.
Try wrapping branches from similar trees to improve your expertise and dexterity. You should try out different wires on your practice branch to see the results before proceeding to the actual tree that you want to train. For doing the full tree a number of different thicknesses will be needed and you should practice using each and every of them.
To master the delicate skill of bonsai wiring, patience is required. Do not be disheartened, however, because if you are willing to take the time you can learn how to do this, and you’ll be so happy with the results.
To find a great bonsai tree that will grow and flourish in the environment you plan to grow it in, you have to know a few things first. From bonsai shaping to bonsai training pots, there's a lot involved in this art.
